Wolves are among my favorite animals. Wolves have been a lifelong artistic focus for me. Wolves are complex, social, and deeply misunderstood animals. Their story in the United States is one of ecological significance, but also of struggle, shaped by politics and superstition.

They are a keystone species. Scientific study has shown that their presence in the landscape has powerful ramifications. They are keepers of the land. They can alter vegetation and even the course of the rivers with their movements and, subsequently, the movements of prey species. Their reintroduction to Yellowstone has had many ecological benefits.

Recently, I have been introduced to the coastal wolves of the Great Bear Rainforest in the Pacific Northwest thanks to the magical and inspiring work of wildlife photographers and film makers such as Ian McAllister, Paul Nicklen, Tom McPherson, Steve Woods, and others. Through their work I’ve gained a window into the amazing world of the coastal wolf and fallen in love with this wonderful species. This painting was inspired by their imagery.
