“This place is magic”

This piece was inspired by my trip to Iceland in 2019 with Light Grey Art Lab-team Grey Seal, and produced for the Together Residency Exhibition in 2020.

Framed diptych, gouache on paper.

10″x20″

This Place Is Magic-framed vertical dyptich mockup in room. Painting of a gray seal portrait over a green landscape background inspired by Krafla Lava Feilds in Iceland and Painting of a gray seal portrain over a red landscape background inspired by Hverir Geothermal Area in Iceland.

I painted two 5″ x 7″ grey seal portraits in gouache, setting them against abstracted landscapes inspired by my own experiences. The backgrounds are based on my interpretations of photos I took while hiking through Hverir Geothermal Area and the Krafla Volcano Lava Fields—two of the most unforgettable places I’ve ever visited.

The entire trip was incredible, but these hikes stood out the most. At Hverir, I was struck by the surreal colors of the soil, the thick scent of sulfur, and the eerie sensation of walking through dense columns of geothermal steam—like stepping into another world. At Krafla, a light drizzle fell as vibrant green moss stretched across jagged lava formations, the crisp air carrying the freshness of untouched wilderness.

These experiences are burned into my memory, and I think about Iceland all the time. I loved it there.
